“You and me, forever.”

A villanelle

The way you looked at me that night stuck in my head

as we danced around from room to room and hall to hall,

and I’ll always remember those words you said.

I can only hope that my truths weren’t why you fled

that day in the park where we danced last fall.

The way you looked at me that night stuck in my head

as we watched the sky go from blue to red

We talked of the past and dreamed of nights in Montreal

and I’ll always remember those words you said.

I think the next time I see you I’ll be dead.

As I remember dragging my hands on the flowers decorating the walls

The way you looked at me that night stuck in my head

One day at dinner, you got on one knee to look ahead

With tears running down my face I thought of a ball

and I’ll always remember those words you said.

Stuck in the rain staring at the sky with dread

I waited for you to return, but I foolishly recall

The way you looked at me that night stuck in my head

and I’ll always remember those words you said.
